It’s a small, small world..

I was in a local store today and whilst at the check out this lady came up to me and said ,”You used to work in the Granary in Nanaimo”.

It is over 26 months since I retired from the Granary so the lady has a good memory and I did remember her.

This is indeed a small world we live in.

The Granary Family Restaurant

Granary Family RestaurantFor a taste of the United Kingdom without leaving Nanaimo, try the Granary Family Restaurant, 1533 Estevan Road #7, in the Terminal Park North strip mall off Island Highway North. It’s facing Save On Foods. This popular owner-operated establishment serves English delicacies like meatloaf, steak and kidney pie, liver and onions, Salisbury steak, pork chops, roast chicken, sausage, chicken pot pie, and steak sandwich at $9.95 for a hearty full portion or a bit less for a smaller portion. Most meals come with frozen peas, carrots, and corn.
The $5.50 breakfast special is served from 8 to 11 am but an extensive a la carte breakfast menu is available all day. Lots of seniors from nearby apartments come out for the lunch special listed on a blackboard outside. A choice of eight burgers is available ($7.50 to $9.50), and of course, there’s English fish and chips ($7.95 to $11.50). The selection for vegetarians is limited, however. The Granary is famous for it’s homemade dessert pies at $3.95 to $4.95 a slice, and the strawberry waffles with whipping cream are sinfully huge. The smiling staff just keeps refilling your $1.50 bottomless coffee cup and a choice of English ales is on tap.
The Granary is also fun for it’s homey British atmosphere with photos of Spitfire aircraft and other UK memorabilia on the walls. Clocks providing the time in Newfoundland, Alberta, Sydney (Australia), and England hang over the kitchen window (the Alberta clock recalls a former abode of the owners). The Granary Family Restaurant (tel. 250-754-4899) is open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 7:30 pm.
